The area's rich history
goes back thousands of years to the ancestors of the present-day
Nisqually Tribe. The first European settlement in the area was Fort
Nisqually, an outpost of the Hudson's Bay Company first established in
1833.
In 1906, the E.I.
DuPont de Nemours Company purchased 5 square miles of land for
the DuPont Powder Works, the explosives plant and housing for
workers that later became the village of DuPont. In 1951,
residents were allowed to purchase their homes, and the city was
incorporated.
DuPont is listed in the National Register of Historic Places as
the only former company town in the state in which most of the
homes maintain historic integrity.
Adjacent to the village, DuPont operated a manufacturing plant
for nearly 70 years, producing explosives that were used to
blast stumps, clear roadways and fight 2 world wars. In 1976,
the plant was closed and DuPont sold its 3,200 acres to the
Weyerhaeuser Company.
